OpenAI's official, production-oriented agent framework (Python and TypeScript): define agents with instructions and tools, hand off between specialized agents, enforce input/output guardrails, persist sessions, and trace every run in the OpenAI dashboard. The upgrade path from the experimental Swarm project, with a deliberately small primitive set — agents, handoffs, guardrails, sessions — instead of heavy abstraction. Provider-agnostic enough to run non-OpenAI models via LiteLLM. Best for teams standardizing multi-agent workflows on OpenAI with built-in tracing/evals. Limitation: deepest value (tracing, evals) assumes the OpenAI platform; abstractions are thinner than LangGraph for complex stateful graphs.
